If you love sewing, crocheting, knitting, or any form of creative crafting, shoemaking is the next exciting frontier. Imagine stepping out in sandals you've made yourself—stylish, comfortable, and uniquely yours. Ready to dive in?
Here's a simple, step-by-step guide to get you started.
Already know how to create a sandal upper? Watch the final step of the process below - attaching your sandal upper to the clog sole:
Step 1: Crafting the Insole and Upper
Begin by designing and creating the insole and upper part of your sandals. The insole is the part your foot will rest on, while the upper will secure your foot to the sole.
Materials Needed:
- Leather or sturdy fabric for the insole and upper
- Shoemaking tool kit
- Buckles
- Insole board and foam sheets
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Instructions:
- Measure and Cut: Start by cutting out your insole pattern and use it to trace onto your texon board and foam sheets. Glue your texon board and foam together with water-based shoemaking glue to create a nice padded insole. Once you've created your padded insole - cover it with the leather of your choice.
- Design the Upper: Decide on the style of your sandal upper. Whether you prefer a simple strap or a more intricate design, cut your chosen leather (or sturdy fabric) accordingly. If you choose to use fabric, you may want to interface it to give it more structure.
- Attach the Upper to the Insole: Line your straps and sew them together using a sewing machine or by hand stitching. Make sure the stitching is strong and secure. Then position and glue your straps in place over the insole.
Step 2: Preparing the Insole
To ensure a good bond between your handmade upper and the clog sandal sole, you'll need to create a flat, smooth surface for gluing.
Materials Needed:
Instructions:
- Once you have made your upper, you need to create a flat surface on the underneath of the insole to make sure it attaches to the sole properly. You can do this by skiving the underneath of the insole with a safety beveler.
Step 3: Gluing Up the Sole
Now it’s time to glue your beautifully crafted upper and insole to the sole. Using the right adhesive is crucial for durability and comfort.
Materials Needed:
- Strong shoe adhesive
- Small applicator and glue pots
Instructions:
- Apply Glue: Using a small applicator, evenly apply a layer of glue to both the sole and the underside of the insole.
- Wait: Let the glue sit for a few minutes until it becomes tacky. This usually takes about 5-10 minutes, but follow the instructions on your adhesive for best results.
Step 4: Attaching the Insole to the Sole
The final step is to attach the insole and upper to the prepared sole, ensuring a strong and secure bond.
Instructions:
- Align and Press: Carefully align the insole with the sole. Press them together firmly to ensure a good bond.
