Croc-Effect Mule Sliders: My New Everyday Obsession
Some shoe ideas just don’t let you go. This one started as a little sketch in the back of my mind - a pair of handmade mule sliders, simple and easy, but with a slightly closed-in upper that felt almost clog-like. I kept imagining that sculptural silhouette, the relaxed shape, and how perfect it would be as a slip-on mule slider. Eventually, I sat down in my studio to make it a reality.
Before I even touched a pattern, I already knew exactly which leather I wanted for this project: a croc-effect beige leather with gorgeous texture and structure. The pattern of the croc effect leather elevates even the simplest design, giving these mules a gorgeous and custom-made feel.
To sketch out my pattern, I grabbed my barefoot last. I wasn’t planning on making fully barefoot shoes, but I did want that wide toe box shape that makes a mule more comfortable and naturally fitting. Using a barefoot-inspired approach gave me the roomy front profile I was dreaming of.

I also added a centre seam down the upper - something I loved from my barefoot derby project. It gives these croc-effect mules a clean, handcrafted focal point that highlights the shape and structure of the leather.

For construction, I went with a classic stitch-down shoe construction. The exposed stitching around the edge is one of my favourite looks in handcrafted leather shoes - functional, minimal, and proudly handmade.

This method also keeps the lasting nice and flat since everything (upper, lining, and stiffener) is lasted outward. No bulky wrapped edges - just a clean, tidy finish that suits these DIY leather mules beautifully.
For the soling, I combined one layer of EVA with a 4mm resin sheet. This mix gives the mules a nice balance: a touch of structure from the resin and a bit of flex from the EVA. If you were making barefoot-style mules, you could definitely choose just one layer for a softer, more flexible feel.
Once everything was lasted, I glued the insole directly onto the soling. It’s such a satisfying step - watching the edges align and the shoe shape come together always feels a little magical.

After a few focused studio sessions, they were done. My croc-effect mule sliders - structured, roomy, easy to wear, and exactly what I envisioned the moment I picked up that textured leather. They’re the perfect blend of handcrafted footwear, everyday comfort, and a hint of croc-effect leather flair.
And now, of course… I kind of want to make them in every colour.
